As the Learn with Sport project ceases, we celebrate it’s success!...

On the 31st December the Learning with Sport project will unfortunately come to an end. The project lasted 9 months longer than anticipated due to its success in offering ongoing training to individuals and groups in Wear Valley through sport.

In January 2007 2D was proud to launch the Learning with Sport (LWS) project and welcomed James Deacon-Brown (a secondee from Wear Valley District Council) to the team.

Over the past 2 years James has successfully exceeded the targets set for the project. He’s worked closely with a number of well established sports clubs throughout Wear Valley, identifying skills gaps and offering appropriate training to individuals /coaches, raising the standard of individuals and clubs.

Out of the 230+ people James has assisted through various qualifications, around 7% of previously unemployed people have gained employment as a direct result of working with the project.

One example is Denis Johnstone pictued left with Eddie the Eagle Edwards accepting his award for Achievment through the LWS project. Denis gained employment at the Spectrum Leisure Complex after completing training in Emergency First Aid, Child Protection and Level 1 Gym instructor training through the LWS project.

The LWS project has also helped establish various new sports clubs /centres, in particular the Wellness on Wheels legacy projects that currently have over 30 volunteers all trained through the LWS project. He has also helped introduce new members into certain clubs offering qualifications to bring them up to the national standard and referring some onto none sport related training elsewhere.

Michele Armstrong CEO of 2D says "this project has built on the success of Community Sports Club Development. James has been an asset to the project and 2D, I am delighted that James will be staying at 2D in the short term to help Robert Fothergill in Children and Youth Participation. The skills James has developed will continue to help 2D achieve our aims and objectives".

It is important that sports clubs and their volunteers who help make up the voluntary and community sector continue to come to 2D for support.

We provide advice and guidance that is tailored to individual requirements.
